Antique French Anduze Urn, Signed Louis Bourguet, c. 1900
$4,400
A classic Anduze urn from the Cévennes in southern France, one of the most iconic forms in French garden pottery. This example bears the maker's medallion of Louis Bourguet, Anduze, Gard, centered on an urn emblem. It has the traditional tulip-shaped body on a pedestal foot, a broad rolled rim, molded garland swags with rosettes, and ringed bands at the waist.
The surface shows the famous Anduze "flammé" glaze, with streaks of honey, ochre, green, and deep manganese brown flowing over the terracotta.
Over time, much of the glaze has weathered away to reveal the warm, chalky clay beneath. The result is a beautifully layered, painterly patina that collectors prize and that only age and years outdoors can produce.
